Joseph Poole Addey (1852-1922) PORTRAIT OF A LADY READING OUTDOORS signed and dated [1905] lower right watercolour 38 by 29cm., 15 by 11.5in. Provenance: With the label of Charles Nicholls & Son, Alcester, Warwickshire, on reverse Addey's portraits and figure studies constitute some of his best work, giving cause to Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin pronouncing him a distinguished artist who "deserves to be better known" (The Watercolours of Ireland, 1994, p.265). Born in Dublin and educated at the RDS Drawing School and the Cork School of Art, Addey was appointed the first Head Master of the Londonderry School of Art. He contributed extensively to the RHA, and also showed many works with the WCSI and the Dublin Sketching Club, whose summer outings he often accompanied as a consulting tutor.
