Patriarch of the fabled family of American politicians (1888–1969) who served as American ambassador to Great Britain, from 1938 to 1940. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, February 5, 1946. Kennedy turns down a seat on the American National Theatre and Academy committee. In full: “Thank you for your invitation to join the Committee of the ANTA. However, at the present time I am withdrawing from directorships rather than adding to them. Therefore, I will be unable to serve but I appreciate very much your invitation.” A secretarial notation appears near the top left corner. In fine condition, with light wrinkling, staple hole at the upper left corner, and light toning. Accompanied by a copy of the invitation sent to Kennedy.
