The town was the last stopping place for the band of Nez Perce Indians chased by the U.S. Cavalry for hundreds of miles after numerous treaty violations forced the tribe off their deeded lands. Led by their talented Chief Joseph, this small band of Indians eluded a much larger pursuing force until the sheer weight of numbers decided the issue. The town is named after the famous chief, whose skill and bravery elicited much admiration even from his pursuers. John Hickman told me one evening years ago that the only note he ever owned that he truly regretted selling was the one note he ever handled on this community because of the story behind the note. It's now been thirty-two years since the last public offering of any example from Joseph, and, with only two notes known from here, it may well be that long before another comes up. Fine.
Obtained from Richard Dreger in July of 1987. (8,000-14,000 )

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour.
