<B>Joseph Nourse Autograph Letter Signed,</B></I> 1 page, 7" x 9", with integral address sheet, "<I>Near George Town</B></I>", Nov. 5, 1835, to General N. Towson of the National Monument Society regarding an appointment he was being considered for by the Board. In part: "<I>My name being before the Board as an applicant for the Agency of South Carolina, nothing but a confidence in my self of usefulness in the grand undertaking wence have induced me to come forward on this occasion...</B></I>" Nourse was the first Register of the Treasury of the U.S. and served in that capacity under six administrations until Andrew Jackson's election found him forced from office in 1929. Nourse would be successful in obtaining the appointment he sought in this letter. <BR><BR>Paper has uneven toning,and a small hole affecting a single letter.
