Joseph Melling (St. Avold/ Lothringen 1724 - 1796 Straßburg) Putti, warming themselves at a fire in a landscape at dusk, oil on canvas, 77,5 x 138,5 cm, w/ frame (frame delivered separately) (Wo).€ 8.000 - 12.000 US $ 7.920 - 11.880 Provenance: Supraporta from Schloß Karlsruhe, burnt out in 1944; priv. coll. Germany Expert's Report: Ludwig Meyer, Archiv für Kunstgeschichte, 8. May 2002. Like the two paintings of Joseph Melling sold at auction on 21. March 2002 at the Dorotheum (Lot 255 and 256), the above painting comes from the interior of Schloß Karlsruhe, burnt down after a bombing raid. Ludwig Meyer's research has shown that like the other two works this painting only escaped destruction because Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden had already transferred it to the new chateau at Baden in ca. 1853. On 11. October 1995 it was sold at auction along with the other two works by Sotheby's London as part of the collection of the 'Markgrafen und Großherzoge von Baden', though with an erroneous attribution.
