British surgeon (1827–1912) who pioneered the practice of sterile surgery, one of the most important medical advances of the day. His name later became synonymous with a best-selling brand of antiseptic mouthwash. Fountain pen signature and sentiment, “Believe me. Sincerely yours, Lister” on an off-white 4.25 x 2.75 slip clipped from the close of a letter on a black-bordered sheet of stationery. Faint ink transfer and mounting residue touching his first two words, otherwise fine condition.
