British surgeon (1827–1912) who innovated the practice of sterile surgery, one of the most important medical advances of the day. Partly-printed DS in Latin, signed “Josephus Lister,” one page, 19.5 x 15, August 1, 1874. A diploma awarding a bachelor of medicine degree from the University of Edinburgh to Samuel McVie, signed below by 32 professors of the university. In addition to Lister, other signers include Robert Christison, toxicologist; Charles Piazzi Smyth, astronomer; William R. Sanders, pathologist; Philip Kelland, mathematician; John Hughes Bennett, physician; William B. Hodgson, educational reformer; James Lorimer, jurist and political philosopher; and John H. Balfour, botanist. Creasing to borders and a small tear to right edge, otherwise fine condition. In 1869, after revolutionizing surgical procedure with his work on antisepsis, Lister was named professor of Clinical Surgery at Edinburgh; he enjoyed his popularity there—with his clinics and classes packed with eager students—until 1877, when he moved to King’s College in London. A handsomely engraved document featuring the rare Latin form of Lister’s signature.
