British surgeon (1827–1912) who pioneered the practice of sterile surgery, one of the most important medical advances of the day. His name later became synonymous with a best-selling brand of antiseptic mouthwash. ALS, one page, 4 x 6, personal letterhead, November 22, 1884. Shirt letter of invitation to fellow surgeon Joseph Fayre. In full: “Could you give me the pleasure of your company at dinner on Thursday, Dec. 4th at 8 o’clock?” In fine condition, with a thin mounting strip along left edge, as well as a bit of scattered light soiling.
