Military officer (1822–1899) who served at Chickamauga, New Orleans, and elsewhere during the Civil War. A close associate of Grant’s, Reynolds went on to fight in the Black Hills War, commanding a critical attack in 1876 that proved to be a turning point which brought the Lakota and Cheyenne to the realization that they were at war. The failure of the campaign led to Reynolds’s court martial, conviction, suspended sentence, and, in 1877, resignation from the army. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite bust portrait of Reynolds in uniform by an anonymous studio, signed on the reverse in black ink, “J. J. Reynolds, Bt. Maj. Genl.” In very good condition, with irregularly trimmed edges and a ballpoint notation to the reverse.
