Notorious and immensely unpopular Union general (1814–1879), Hooker was criticized for his erratic leadership, heavy drinking, poor sense of diplomacy, and the freewheeling atmosphere of his headquarters. Endorsement signature, “Joseph Hooker,” at the bottom of a one-page memo, 3.75 x 5.25, no date but receiving stamp of September 12, 1865. In full: “Respectfully returned. This man has been mustered out of the service, and the Dept. commander has no authority to take further action in the case. I am of opinion, however, that no further action should be taken.” In very good condition, with a black receiving stamp touching his first name, light creasing, trimmed edges, and a mounting strip on the reverse along the left side showing through to the front. Accompanied by an unsigned etching. Nice signature from one of the more dubious names of the Civil War.
