General Joseph Hooker autograph letter signed, datelined Washington, 18 September 1863 where he writes in part, ''...The principles involved in the pending struggle are as broad as the universe and eternal.'' Only several months after Hooker's removal from command at Gettysburg, he was undoubtedly heavy in thought and mood during the fall of 1863 when this letter was written. Measures 7.5'' x 9.75'', matted in a simple black frame. Folds and small parts of ink smudging, affecting ''h'' in Joseph. Very good condition.
