Veteran of the American Revolution, who in 1789 was appointed by George Washington as the second collector at the port of Salem. Partly-printed DS, signed “Jos. Hiller,” one page, 12.5 x 7.5, December 6, 1807. Official document issued at the port of Salem, Massachusetts, by Hiller, in part: "Whereas Elias Hasket Derby, Jr., Master of the Ship Grand Turk…now lying in the Harbour of Salem and by God's Grace bound for the Isle of France is now ready to proceed on the said Voyage: And it being just and proper to prevent, if possible, any Suspicions that may arise in the Minds of any Persons, on Account of any supposed infectious Disease on board said Vessel; Therefore Know Ye by these Presents, That…there is not in the said Port of Salem any Pestilence or contagious Distemper whatever." Signed at the conclusion by Hiller as a naval officer. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. In fine condition, with two professionally restored areas of corner paper loss.
