( Santa Fe, New Mexico: Fenn Publishing Co., 1983 ). First edition, private edition, one of 227 numbered copies signed by the author, and with an original etching of Standing Deer by Sharp. Folio (11.5” x 9.5”). 340 pages. Profusely illustrated, author Forrest Fenn has included 148 color plates and countless photographs and sketches in telling the story of Sharp's life, and has signed the title page in bold, black felt-tipped pen. This handsome book is completely leather bound, with raised ribs and gilt lettering on the spine. All edges gilt. A fine copy in astounding condition. Housed and protected in a cloth slipcase. Sharp was an American artist and photographer, known for his stunning images of American Indians, most notably, many who had been in Custer's Little Bighorn Battle. Sharp studied art in Europe, and taught in Cincinnati, before moving to Montana to work in earnest on his oil paintings of Indians and Indian life, many of which are now at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.. Sharp became deaf as a young boy, following a swimming accident.
