"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Letter from Joseph Heller dated 30 September 1974, right at the launch of his book ''Something Happened,'' the long-awaited novel after his debut ''Catch-22.'' Letter is addressed to James Nagel who had recently published ''Critical Essays on Catch-22'' and reads in full, ''Your letter, dated September 18, didn't reach me until the 25th, when I was on the point of leaving for Chicago for several days. I've only now returned. I'd like very much to meet you while I'm in Boston, at least for a drink. Probably, as you say, my schedule will be heavy, but there should be time for at least that. I don't know yet all that the publisher and the Boston Globe do have in store for me, although I do know it will probably be a great deal. Why don't you write me right now giving me a phone mumber or two where I can reach you when I do have time? Better still, I'll be at the Ritz-Carlton, and you can telephone me there and leave a number if I'm not in. The book is already out, or at least in the book stores (the sales report is good from the Harvard Coop), although the publication date is October 16th. I would guess that the Globe has already given the book out for review. Other papers and a few of the weeklies have already sent advance copies of the reviews in; these are all extremely favorable. But if the Globe wants you and you want to do it, go ahead. Probably, there will be at least one interview with someone from the Globe and I'll try to keep in touch with you that way if no other. Best, [signed] Joseph Heller''. Single page 6'' x 8'' letter on Heller's stationery is stapled to the envelope also from Heller's personal paper stock. In near fine condition with a small horizontal chip to the bottom of the page, nearly indiscernible and not affecting signature.
