Sixth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1838–1918) and nephew of its founder, Joseph Smith. ALS, one page, 6 x 7.75, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints letterhead, June 7, 1917. Letter to Agnes Showel, in full: “I have been absent, for some time, from home; and only recently returned from a visit to the Territory of Hawaii. I have just found your letter of Apr. 22d asking for my autograph. Hope this acknowledgment will prove satisfactory.” Smith adds a brief postscript, “I am now over 78 years old.” In fine condition, with trivial soiling. In 1854, a fifteen-year-old Smith traveled to Hawaii for a three-year mission, his first with the LDS. During this period he spent much of his time preaching, healing the sick and possessed, and learning the Hawaiian language. He returned numerous times over his life and oversaw the planning and construction of the beautiful Laie Hawaii Temple from 1915 to 1919.
