Confederate general (1807–1891) who, when Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, resigned his commission as a brigadier general in the regular army—the highest-ranking US officer to do so. Unsigned original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite bust portrait of Johnston in uniform by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York. Scattered spotting and slight foxing to image, and a two-cent revenue stamp affixed to reverse, otherwise fine condition.
