TLS signed “Ever yours, Joseph Conrad,” one page both sides, 7 x 9, Oswalds, Bishopsbourne letterhead, April 7, 1923. Letter to his friend and biographer Elbridge L. Adams, in part: “Many thanks to you for your good letter with the advertisement sheet of your article. I am truly glad to have your friendly voice to (in a manner of speaking) introduce me to the Citizens of the Great Republic…As to myself I have had no actual attack of gout for nearly ten months, and, at the moment, it doesn’t look as if one were coming. The truth is that while I am sitting still, so to speak, I feel quite well; but very little exertion tells on me immensely, mainly in the form of fits of coughing, which are very fatiguing…This, my dear Adams, will be the last you will hear from me till we meet under the American sky. I beg you both to believe in my sentiments of affection and regard.” Conrad has handwritten the date and salutation, and makes several handwritten emendations to the text. In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds, and a toned strip of tape to right edge of reverse (covering a few words of text and touching the extreme tip of the signature).
