Revolutionary War soldier. LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.5, November 1819. Bloomfield writes to the Honorable John C. Calhoun Esq., Secretary of War, in full: “The undersigned are informed that the Office of Assistant Surgeon General, for the Southern Division of the United States, will shortly be rendered vacant, by the resignation of the present Incumbent. We therefore beg leave to recommend for that Office, Dr. Augustus R. Taylor, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and to assure you, that he is, in all respects, well qualified to discharge its duties. As a man, a citizen, a Physician &a Surgeon, he has long maintained the most honorable standing, in the public estimation, and, we believe, merits the public confidence,” signed at the conclusion by Bloomfield and two others, and docketed on the reverse in another hand. In very good condition, with lightly intersecting folds, some scattered light toning, a few stray ink marks, a small area of paper loss to the bottom right edge, and a small area of ink erosion just below, but not affecting, the signature.
