Confederate general (1822–1894). Kershaw played a gallant and distinguished part in all the operations of the 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, almost literally, from 1st Manassas to the Appomattox campaign. While temporarily attached to General Ewell's command on the retreat from Sayler's Creek, on April 6, 1865, he was captured, and confined at Fort Warren prison. After the war, Kershaw again practiced law, and was elected to the state senate in 1865. Scarce wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo, featuring an ink notation in another hand in the bottom border, "Maj. Gen. Kershaw,” continuing on the reverse, "of Army Northern Virginia." Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York. In fine condition, with some trivial soiling, and slight rippling to the right edge.
