Joseph Anton Koch, Circle of, Mountain Walker, 19th Century
This charming painting is the work of an Austrian artist active in the circle of Joseph Anton Koch in the 19th century. The work is directly reminiscent of his great heroic landscape panoramas and shows the small figure of a mountain hiker in the center, which is also characteristic for the late work of the Biedermeier master. The present painting is a beautiful example of the idealized and mystic intention of Joseph Anton Koch and impressively conveys his idea of ??the unity of nature and man.

The canvas is relined and verso inscribed ‘Joseph A. Koch’. The edge on the right side shows a number of small abrasions in the paint surface. The depiction shows scattered tiny abrasions, minimal scratches and some areas of retouching; these points are slightly discolored. The wooden frame shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 72 x 57 cm and the size of the stretcher is 61.5 x 45.5 cm.

Joseph Anton Koch (1768-1839)

The Tyrolean painter Joseph Anton Koch is one of the most famous landscape painters of the Biedermeier period. His artistic career began with an apprenticeship with the sculptor Ignaz Ingerl (1751-1752) in Augsburg, followed by further artistic training at the Karlsschule in Stuttgart. In 1792, Koch joined a Jacobin circle in Strasbourg and then in Biel, Switzerland. During extended Alps hikes he saw the impressive landscape impressions that he later processed in his landscape depictions. Thanks to a scholarship he travelled to Italy in 1794 and settled in Rome, where he became one of the most important representatives of the Brotherhood of St. Luke (which lead to the Nazarene movement). Works by Joseph Anton Koch are located in well-known collections such as the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Belvedere in Vienna.
