Soldier, judge, and politician (1757–1837) who served as a United States Senator from Tennessee from 1799 to 1815, and later as the first Comptroller of the United States Treasury. LS signed “Jos. Anderson,” one page, 8 x 9.75, August 1, 1820. Anderson writes to US Attorney, Charles J. Ingersall, Esq., from the Comptroller’s Office of the Treasury Department, in full: “I transmit herewith an authenticated copy of the account of Jacob A. Listler, late an Ensign 16 Regt. U. S. Mfy. which exhibits a balance of $873.24. One from him to the U. States: for the recovery of the same, with interest, I have requested that first may be instituted without delay. It is stated that the debt resides at Churchtown, Lancaster County, Penna.” In very good condition, with scattered creasing and toning, two small areas of paper loss to the left edge, and old tape repairs to folds on the reverse.
