English essayist, poet and politician (1672-1719). LS signed “J. Addison,” one page both sides, 7 x 9, January 7, 1706. Letter to diplomat and politician George Stepney (1663-1707) about a debate in the House of Commons on a loan to John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough and his heirs in the aftermath of the Battle of Ramillies, one of the most important battles during the Spanish War of Succession. Even on the day of the debate Addison writes that the request from Annesley, Ward, and Sir Casar Willame Vevian been rejected. In part: “One said this was showing no honor to His Grace but to a posterity that he was not among Casar concern’d in. Other Expressions hoped ye Duke tho he had’m Victorious over the Enemy would not think of being so over a House of Commons: w [hi] ch was said in pursuance to a motion made by some of the sort that Craftier would not oppose the proposition directly but turn it off by a side wind pretending that it being a money affaire it should be refer’d to a Committee of the Whole House w [hi] ch, in all probability would have defeated the whole affair…” Attached by its second integral page to an identical size sheet. In very good condition, with show-through from text on reverse, intersecting folds, some scattered light toning and soiling, and signature a bit cramped.
