Born in 1870, Hoffmann distinguished himself at a young age in the studio of the noted Viennese architect Otto Wagner. In 1897, Hoffmann allied himself with a group of young architects and designers in a movement called the Vienna Secession. The Secessionists were attracted to new ideas from around the world, and specifically from the Art Nouveau movement, but had grown tired with the heaviness of official and corporate architecture as expressed in the official buildings of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Hoffmann led many Secessionists in the formation of the Wiener Werkstatte, the Vienna Workshops, which incorporated design details into an overall architectural vision. <p> Hoffmann's interests and expertise covered a wide range of disciplines: architecture, music, painting, and design of furniture, tableware, fabrics, and virtually all objects. This universality was reflected in his work. He became noted for using the concept of a Gesamtkunstwerk, a "Total Work of Art." The ideal was borrowed from the worlds of opera, music and theater. Hoffmann was keenly aware of all artistic developments in the world and in his own Vienna, which was in the midst of a remarkable creative explosion ...
