Jose De Paez, Oil on Copper Painting of Saint Antonio ca. 1775, signed, lower left hand corner by Jose de Paez. De Paez was a prolific painter of Mexican castes and religious compositions ranging in size from a nun's badge to large paintings and murals including such works as, "The Destruction of Mission San Sabá in the Province of Texas and The Martyrdom of the Fathers Alonso de Terreros and Joseph Santiesteban". He was a favorite painter of the Franciscans who commissioned him to paint and execute paintings for their Mexican missions and it is believed that this portrait of Saint Antonio, as a patron saint, was originally destined for the mission of San Antonio de Valero, or the Alamo as it is better known. A companion painting of St. Bonaventure on a similar sized copper sheet, is believed to have been painted at the same time, hangs in the museum at the San Buenaventura Mission in San Luis Obispo, California. Courtesy of Geroge O.
