Jose Posada Don Quixote Printed Broadside. One page, 12.25" x 16", Mexico, nd. The Jose Posada lithograph of "La Calavera de Don Quijote" is featured on this broadside. Posada is known for his lithographs which often feature skeletons. His art invokes the idea of the danse macabre, the medieval notion that death was universal and constant despite one's class or place in society. Today his work is considered folk art and is highly associated with the Mexican holiday Dia de Los Muertos. This broadside is known as a corrido, or ballad; it contains rhyming lyrics and a print by Posada. Posada and his friend Vanegas Arroyo put these out on cheap paper and sold them for pennies on streetcorners. They did this in order to educate the masses and insert their own unique commentary into society. <r The broadside is in very fine condition; some dark staining around the edges; water damage stain in lower right corner; edges slightly worn.
