Jose Posada Broadside Collection. (3 Items) Jose Posada Broadside Collection.
Jose Posada Broadside Collection. This lot contains three Posada broadsides, all measuring 11.5" x 16.5". The titles of the broadsides are; La Calavera De los Papeleros Y de los Boleros, Calaveras Del Monton, and Barata De Calaveras. Posada has become renowned for his artistic prints which contain animated skeletons, who often satirize and mock upscale society and aristocratic culture. Today his art is closely tied to Mexico's annual holiday, Dia de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead. Mexican culture has an intimate and congenial relationship with death, which can be easily seen through Posada's work. These three prints are known as corridos, or ballads, which were printed and sold on street corners for only a few pennies. They contain rhyming songs and a print by Posada. These were produced by Vanegas Arroyo, Posada, and Arroyo's son, Blas; they all wanted to provide cheap literature for the masses, as well as insert their own pugnacious commentary on the ills of society. Each of the these corridos has a rhyming song and a humorous Calaveras activity. For instance the Barata de Calaveras or the Bargain Sale of Skeletons, mocks high-society dress. All three broadsides are very humorous and evoke a spirit which still lives in Mexico today.

The broadsides are all in fine condition on average; corners and edges slightly worn; darkened areas present on edges.
