Of the two Padilla brother-painters (the other named Cayetano), José Antonio is the more distinguished artist. José Antonio is known for paintings of the Guadalupe, one of which was taken by a priest in the nineteenth century to the Mission Santa Barbara in California. His major work is a series of paintings now in Tepotzotlán on the life of the Jesuit Saint Stanislaus Kostka.
José Antonio’s style is recognizable, the figures being delicate, with rounded faces, close-set eyes, and tiny noses and mouths.
