Sonie Ames grew up on a farm in Utah. As she wasn?t from a wealthy family, she needed to find a craft that would enable her to support herself. As she was a talented tailor, she began by making her own clothes as well as her friends? and family?s, which eventually evolved into a successful 27-year career as a designer dressmaker. However, work was tedious and demanding, causing Ames to suffer from fatigue and other illnesses. Upon her doctor?s orders, at the age of fifty, Ames gave up her career to be a porcelain artist. She set out to learn all that she could about the medium and before long she was the one giving the seminars, nationally and internationally. Ames is now known throughout the world as ?The Rose Lady?, and has literally reached hundreds of thousands aspiring artists through her classes, her books, her website, and other instructive materials. With her extraordinary talent for painting realistically what she sees from nature, it is no wonder that she has gained such acclaim. Sonie Ames Designs was established in 1964, and while it has undergone some changes over time, it is still a wonderful tribute to Ames? talent and dedication to the art form she cherished so much.
