<B>Jonesboro, IL</B></I> - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 609 <B>The First NB</B></I> Ch. # (M)12373<BR> The first of a pair of spectacular serial number 1 examples from this extremely rare location. Jonesboro, located deep in the "Little Dixie" section of southern Illinois, is one of the state's smallest county seats, with a population of under 2000 people. It's chief claim to fame is its location as the site of the third Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858. This was the sole National Bank established in Jonesboro, with this minimally capitalized institution issuing $5 notes only in both large and small size. By 1935, a truly miniscule $180 in large was outstanding, and it should come as no surprise that the latest census shows just two large examples extant from here, with this the sole serial number 1 specimen. Fortunately for collectors, it is a pen signed beauty that displays bright white paper, vivid inks, and awesome eye appeal. PCGS has graded this note <B>Choice About New 58 PPQ</B></I> due only to the very lightest evidence of handling, as this piece clearly never saw one moment of real circulation. Despite handling every significant collection of Illinois Nationals sold in recent years, CAA has never offered a large note from Jonesboro, and Track and Price shows no large offerings from here in any venue as well.
