Important New Hampshire land speculator and militiaman (1726–1787) who served during King George's War, the French and Indian War, and the American Revolution; his name is enshrined in local folklore for a purported deal with the devil. LS signed “Jon'n Moulton,” one page, 7.75 x 10.75, June 27, 1771. Letter to Captain Eliphalet Merrill, referring to the possible promotion of Coronet Brown in the New Hampshire militia. In part: "You remember doubtless our Conversation concerning Corn't Brown's being promoted. I take him to be a very good Sort of a Man, & I believe wou'd make a pretty Officer." In good to very good condition, with small areas of paper loss, and substantial splitting along the fragile intersecting folds.
