American statesman (1760–1824) who was the youngest signer of the US Constitution and who later served as the fourth Speaker of the House of Representatives and as a member of the Senate. Arrested in 1807 in connection with the Aaron Burr conspiracy case, he was never tried, but the scandal effectively ended his political career. ALS signed “Jona: Dayton,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 12.5, December 27, 1821. Letter to James Heath concerning arrangements for some land transactions. In part: “I agree with you, that wherever a surplus is discovered, & the person who has enclosed it, or those who adjoin it, are willing to give a tolerable price, but have not money, you would do well to give them a reasonable credit, & to take their obligations payable by instalments with interest, & secured by a mortgage…You can impress them all very justly with the belief, that they have now an opportunity of obtaining titles for those surpluses much lower than they can ever hereafter obtain them.” Light overall foxing and toning, and two circular areas of toning to the reverse from seals, otherwise fine condition.
