Jonathan Crookes Sheffield Wax Knife c. 1780-1827
The lot features an interesting rare 18th-19th Century wax seal knife from renowned knife maker, Jonathan Crookes of Sheffield, England. The knife shows a double edge short blade which would have been used for an antique wax seal knife, ink scraper tool or bleeder scalpel. The knife is finely stamped on one side, “JONATHAN CROOKES (hallmark of a horizontal heart coming out the barrel of a flintlock dual pistol)”. The hallmark is referred to regularly as the Heart & Pistol touch mark. The knife is secured into a large beautiful polished section of mother of pearl which has a fine tapering design and is capped with a silver like pressed repousse engraved finish and yellow gold wash. Jonathan Crookes knives with the heart and pistol marking with “Jonathan Crookes” dates to circa 1780-1827 (after 1827 the marking changed to Jonathan Crookes & Son) and are highly collectible pieces. Measures overall 3 1/8”L by 1.25”W by ½”D.
