Jonathan Boucher, A View of the Causes and Consequences of the American Revolution, in Thirteen Discourses (London: G. G. and J. Robinson, 1797), first edition, 596 pages, half-leather binding, 8vo (6.25” x 9.25”). When he wrote this Loyalist work about the American Revolution, Jonathan Boucher was vicar of Epsom, Surrey. A former friend of George Washington, he had lived as a preacher in Virginia from 1763 to 1775, when he returned to England to escape the “disloyal tendencies” of the colonists. Nonetheless, he dedicated the book to “George Washington Esquire, of Mount Vernon,” admitting that his work is “avowedly hostile to the Revolution” and addressing himself, not “to the General of a Conventional Army; but to the late dignified President of the United States, the friend of rational and sober freedom.” Inscribed “From the author” on the half-title page. The book is in good condition: the half-title page is loose from the binding and there is some slight acidification on the endpapers and on the page edges, but the paper has not become brittle after 210 years. The book is stored in a protective, cloth-bound slipcase, with leather, gold-lettered spine, in very good condition.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
