US Navy officer (1886–1952) who served in both World Wars, commanding the United States Atlantic Fleet during World War II; he received the Medal of Honor for his actions in 1914 in Veracruz, Mexico. War-dated TLS signed “Cheerio! Jonas,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, United States Atlantic Fleet letterhead, November 29, 1944. Letter to W. J. Holliday in Hammond, Indiana. In part: "I am still in this derby, running free on the outside on the home stretch, and figure when I can polish off this job in the Atlantic I still have plenty of time to be in the Pacific for the kill. The passing of your father was a great shock to me, and I have a full conception of what he meant to his family. You boys and girls were very fortunate to have this dynamic character with you as long as you did; but even then, the blow of his leaving will naturally leave its marks. Your mother and the whole family, of course, have my deepest sympathy in this your hour of trial." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, marked with an initialed "Passed by Naval Censor" stamp. An excellent letter boasting an exhilarating wartime sentiment from the heroic naval commander.
