Jonah and the Whale Shepard Mechanical Bank
Jonah and the Whale Shepard Mechanical Bank
The mechanical bank "Jonah and the Whale", was manufactured by J. and E. Stevens. It is made of cast iron. This bank is number N-3490 in Bill Norman's "The Bank Book" which is a standard reference. The item is in fair condition. The lever works well and so does the whale's mouth. Patented July 15, 1890 by Peter Adams, Mr. Adams assigned his interest over to Charles and Walter Shepard. Place a coin on Jonah’s bow, press the lever and he almost gets tossed overboard. The coin is slung into the whale’s mouth as Jonah is pulled back into the boat in. The whale’s lower jaw moves up and down for several seconds after the action takes place. There is a crack in the "sea" portion of the casting about 3/4" from the bow of the boat. The base length is 10-1/4". Made by SHEPARD HARDWARE COMPANY The paint is good with no paint touch ups.
