People always ask Jon, how many Lassies did you work with on the show? The answer is three, but he worked with the third Lassie for most of the time—for five years.

Timmy and Lassie starred in this heart-warming show on TV from 1957 to 1964. Jon starred in 250 half-hour episodes. In 1962, it was the longest running drama on air with more adults watching than kids, and forty percent of the total TV audience watched the show during its fifth year.

And contrary to the popular saying, Timmy never fell into a well. He fell down hills, off cliffs and all sorts of other place, but never down a well.

Jon’s first role was in the movie, “So Big,” with Jane Wyman and Sterling Hayden when he was not quite three years old. More TV appearances followed that, and then he landed the role of Timmy. His first mom on the show was actually Cloris Leachman. Later, June Lockhart assumed the role.

Jon was a prankster on the set. In those days, they shot TV shows with just one camera, so they had to shoot the same scene over and over again to get it from different angles. To keep himself amused, he moved props around between takes when no one was looking. Or if a glass of milk was on the kitchen table by the ever-present plate of cookies, Jon would drink half the glass between shots of the same scene. Or he’d move a vase of flowers. Next time you watch an old episode, look for Jon’s pranks.

Today, Jon is married and has two children—who are not acting. But he still loves animals, just like Timmy.

Jon also worked with many of the greats of Hollywood, and his wedding was attended by lots of child stars—Jerry Mathers (the Beaver), Johnny Crawford (“The Rifleman”), Jeanne Russell (Margaret on “Dennis the Menace”), and Stan Livingston (“My Three Sons”). Did you know Jay North who played Dennis on “Dennis the Menace” is working as a prison guard today and has been for years? Jon has lots of interesting story about many of your favorite childhood characters. Why don’t you give him a call?
