<B>Johnstown, NY</B></I> - $10 1875 Fr. 419 <B>The First NB</B></I> Ch. # 2418<BR>This note represents one of the greatest New York National Bank Note rarities we have ever had the privilege of handling as well as the joy of laying eyes on an old friend we last saw back in 1979. Your cataloguer sold this to our consignor at a time when we were both much younger and great rarities were much easier to come by. Unique back in 1979 for both bank and town, it has withstood the test of time and remains unique today. Chartered in 1879, this bank issued Series 1875 notes only before liquidating less than ten years later. By 1910, a miniscule $940 represented its entire outstanding circulation. Although Johnstown is somewhat economically depressed today, it was a thriving community of some 10,000 souls back in 1890, and it remains a mystery to this day why this bank was the only nationally chartered institution over a seventy year period in a city of that size. If ever there was a trophy note worthy of the finest of collections, this is it, as only one collector can lay claim to owning a note from this town after the hammer falls tonight.
