Playing Career:
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Dawkins played college basketball at Duke University.
At Duke, he became the team’s all-time leading scorer with 2,556 points.
In his senior year (1985–86), the Duke Blue Devils achieved a remarkable win-loss record of 37–3, reaching the 1986 NCAA championship game.
Dawkins averaged 20.2 points per game and won the Naismith College Player of the Year Award.
He also served as an alternate on the 1984 United States Olympic basketball team.
His jersey number 24 was later retired by Duke.
Coaching Career:
Dawkins transitioned to coaching after his playing days.
He served as an assistant coach at Duke from 1998 to 2008.
From 2008 to 2016, he was the head coach of Stanford, leading the team to two NIT championships (2012, 2015).
In 2016, he became the head coach for the UCF men’s basketball team.
Honors and Awards:
As a player, Dawkins received several accolades, including being named a two-time All-American and winning the Naismith Player of the Year award.
He was also selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team and recognized as one of the greatest players in college basketball history.
