Auction Details
This auction will combine the liquidation of the John Stone Wickett Museum and the remaining items of the Eugene O. Perkins estate held back from Christy's single consignor auction in 1989.
The contents of San Francisco's most exclusive private museum will be going up for sale to the highest bidder.
The John Stone Wickett Museum of Ethnographic Arts and Memorabilia opens to the general public at auction Thursday, August 19, Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21. Referred to as "an elegant treasure house of artistic, cultural and historic artifacts," the museum is filled with antique icons from China, Southeast Asia, India, Africa and the Middle East. Also featured is local "Playland at the Beach" amusement park memorabilia.
Collectors of fine art will appreciate unusual and rare items such as an 18-inch crystal Buddha from Nepal, authentic headdresses and crowns worn by Asian royalty, palanquins that carried ancient queens, eastern religions artifacts and colorful tapestries. Of note is a 27-inch carved rhinoceros horn, similar to the one seen in the movie, "The Italian Job." Wickett, a well known figure in San Francisco since the early 1970’s and a Bay Area native, hoped that guests of the museum would walk away with an appreciation of how international arts and cultures have contributed to American society. He died in July 2003.
Mr. Perkins was a world renowned scholar and collector of rare Chinese porcelain and rare paper items. Paper items will include items such as letters from Napoleon, King George III, Lord Byron and more. Porcelain items will include Ming and Tang items, Famille Verde Porcelain, Georgian Silver, important Estate Jewelry, Chinese Frescos, Chinese Bronze Sculpture, Palace size Royal Vienna Vase and so much more.
