American soldier, explorer, and geologist (1834–1902). After serving as a major in the Union Army and sustaining a severe injury to his arm at Shiloh, Powell led a number of expeditions to the American west, including the first organized passage through the Grand Canyon. He later headed the US Geological Survey and the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution. LS signed “J. W. Powell,” two pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, US Geological Survey letterhead, March 15, 1882. Letter to Senator John Sherman. In part: “In relation to photographs of the Yellowtone…there were no views of that region prepared. Since then the opportunity has been seized to print you the two series requested.” In fine condition, with unobtrusive intersecting folds (the vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature). Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait.
