American soldier, explorer, and geologist (1834–1902). After serving as a major in the Union Army and sustaining a severe injury to his arm at Shiloh, Powell led a number of expeditions to the American west, including the first organized passage through the Grand Canyon. He later headed the US Geological Survey and the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution. TLS signed “J. W. Powell,” one page, 7.75 x 9, US Geological Survey letterhead, February 26, 1887. Letter to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. In full: “I have the honor to request that a copy each of the reports of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs for 1883-84, 1184-85 and 1885-86 may be sent to Rev. S. P. Merrill, Room 5 Trevor Hall, Rochester, New York.” In very good condition, with uniform toning, signature a shade or two light, but completely legible, scattered soiling, and an office stamp to top left. Scarce in any form.
