DS, twelve pages, 8.5 x 11, October 23, 1948. Agreement between Argosy Pictures Corporation and John Wayne for his performance in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. The agreement details information regarding salary, costume, dubbing, credits, additional services to be rendered in conjunction with marketing the film, etc. Boldly signed in fountain pen on the last page by Wayne. In fine condition, with usual punch holes to top border, areas of the signature a shade light, and a rusted staple to upper left. Accompanied by a 2006 TLS from Harry Carey, Jr., regarding his working with Wayne, which reads, in part: “I had the good fortune to have made eleven movies with John Wayne…I once asked him what his favorite role was, thinking he would probably say The Searchers, but he didn’t. He said the role he was most proud of was that of Nathan Brittles in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. He was very definite about that.”
Wayne is arguably best remembered for his roles in the John Ford cavalry trilogy, Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950). Ford pursued Wayne for the role of Nathan Brittles after watching his performance as Thomas Dunson in Red River (1948). With a budget of $1.6 million, the film was one of the most expensive westerns of the time, but became a major hit for RKO Studios and remains a classic. The release also captured the 1950 Academy Award for Best Color Cinematography. This signed agreement pertains to the very role that the Duke himself was most proud! Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
