Boston politician (1891–1980) who served in Congress from 1928 to 1971, and as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1962 to 1971. ALS signed “John McCormack,” three pages, 6 x 9, personal letterhead, October 18, 1974. Interesting letter about President Lyndon B. Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, in part: "Clark and Mrs. Thompson, a wonderful couple, are dear and valued friends of mine. As husband and wife they were inseparable, an example for all others to follow. Clark was not only an outstanding, but a dedicated member of Congress. The 'Johnson temper' is over exaggerated by some columnists. He had his strong likes and dislikes, but in my presence, always expressed which was only occasionally his dislikes in firm but moderate language. Lyndon Johnson was always a gentleman. President Roosevelt thought the world of L.B.J., which feelings President Johnson, from his early days in the House, reciprocated. I was very close to the both of them. I wish I could answer your inquiry about Mrs. Roosevelt's interest, etc. in Lyndon. While I was close to F.D.R., I very seldom through the years was in the presence of Mrs. Roosevelt, and never when any extended conversation took place. My close relationship was with F.D.R." In fine condition.
