ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, August 27, 1881. Letter to Dr. Bowles, in part: "I feel very grateful to you for your kind thoughtfulness in sending me the British Medical Journal. The Congress must have been a very impressive affair and if it should succeed in stimulating individual workers, or in giving the worker suggestions as to the direction of two researches, it will do permanent good…It will probably put a hook in the nose of the antivivisectionist, and prevent our ignorant rulers from yielding to this agitation…The practice of physics is, in point of difficulty, not to be compared with the practice of physic. The asthma has never returned. I look back upon it as upon a diseased dream…My little patient has done wonderfully well. I was helped for a day or two by an able young surgeon from St. Bartholomew's but he had to leave suddenly and I was thus thrown on my own resources. The calf of the leg was deeply attacked, and this morning with oil and flannel I removed the last residue of the crust which covered the calf, disclosing the clean new skin underneath." In fine condition.
