ALS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, November 17, 1851. Letter to the Hon. Robert F. Stockton, a commodore notable for the capture of California during the Mexican–American War, who went on to serve as senator from 1851 to 1853. In part: "I am sure it will give you pleasure at all times, to take by the hand a man worthy of your notice. Such is the gentleman who will hand you this, Col. John S. Cunningham of this State. He was lately Editor of the Pilot at Portsmouth, a Dem. paper, and more recently was the Commissioner for Va. at the World's fair, and more recently still has been appointed by Gov. Floyd, one of his aids. Toward myself he has ever been true in his regard and of you he has not failed at all times to speak in exalted terms…I recommend him to your kindest attentions, and if you can do him a favour in forwarding any wish he may have, you will never resent it. You see I endorse him strongly. I have had no opportunity of bidding you all hail as Senator, heretofore. I earnestly hope that I may have occasion to hail you as something still greater than Commodore or Senator." In fine condition.
