Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14 x 17, August 20, 1841. President Tyler appoints Edward O. C. Ord as “First Lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Tyler and countersigned by Secretary of War John Bell. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains mostly intact. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, overall creasing and wrinkling, scattered soiling and mirroring of ink, and a few noticeable stains and small areas of paper loss to edges. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. This appointment dates to early in the military career of Edward Ord, who had graduated from West Point two years earlier. He most notably went on to serve in the Union Army and played an instrumental role in forcing the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
