John Tyler (1790-1862) President, Autograph Letter Signed "John Tyler" two pages with integral address leaf addressed in his hand, and bearing his franking signature "J. Tyler", 8" x 10", Sherwood Forrest, Charles City County, [Virginia], October 20, 1846 to Mrs. Letitia Floyd. It discusses a professorial post at the College of William and Mary and gives the news of the birth of his son, David Gardiner Tyler (1846-1894). He writes in part: "...in the case of Mr. Holmes I should have interposed all the good offices in my power, for his won merit's sake - and I shall without delay, make known to the Rector of Wm and Mary, my conviction of the judiciousness of his appointment to a suitable professorship in that venerable institution- I believed the present arrangements are altogether temporary, and altho I have ceased to be a Visitor, yet I feign hope that my wishes may have some little influence over the board..." Tyler had been educated at William and Mary, and later, in 1859, served as its chancellor. Tyler continues by mentioning the birth of his son by his second wife, Julia Gardiner Tyler: "...She has recently presented me a glorious boy, who renews my youth, and constitutes with her a precious link to the chain of existence." Loss from seal tear on address leaf not affecting text, usual folds, else very good. Young David would later serve in the Confederate Army as a private in the Rockbridge Artillery, First Virginia Battalion, Army of Northern Virginia. He also served in Congress representing Virginia. A warm, family letter. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
