<B>John Tyler (1790-1862) President, Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>John Tyler</B></I>" as President, two pages, 4.5" x 7.5", no place given, March 12, 1843, to Colonel J. J. Abert of the Topographical Engineer Corps. marked "<I>Private</B></I>" He writes: "<I>Mr. James Cooper informs me that he received an order from you yesterday requiring him immediately to repair to the West. To morrow he was destined to return South, having in charge my daughter Mrs. Tyler and children and obedience to the order would be attended with sad disappointment. Can you not grant him a furlough until a more reasonable period.</B></I>" Mrs. Tyler was Mrs. Priscilla Cooper Tyler, his son robert's wife who, at the time, had two daughters, and acted as White House hostess in the absence of the First Lady.
