John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed John Tyler (1790-1862) President, Autograph Letter Signed,
John Tyler (1790-1862) President, Autograph Letter Signed, "J. Tyler", two pages with integral address leaf addressed in his hand, 6.5" x 8", [no place given], October 9, 1861 to his daughter Letitia Semple. "I hope to be in Williamsburg at some early day - I had designed a visit on Monday last, and wrote to Doctor Miller a week before, to obtain me a passport, but whether Capt. Hill delivered the letter or not I cannot say - So it is no passport has come - Heretofore some member of the family has been too unwell to enable me to leave. My own health is so so for me I go to Richmond to day to meet the visitors whom I sh[oul]d have call'd to W[illia]msburg but for the over crowded state of the town - I write in haste. Capt. hill promising to send this to you." Tyler presided over the secret peace conference that ran February 4th through the 27th, 1861 in Washington. The recommendations made by the conference were rejected by Congress. Tyler then devoted the short remainder of his life to the development of the Confederate States of America sitting in the provisional Congress in August and elected to the Confederate Congress on November 7, 1861. He died before he could take his seat. Few people appreciate an interesting bit of trivia: John Tyler was the ONLY U.S. President whose death was not officially recognized by the Federal Government. It would not be until the Administration of Woodrow Wilson that an official acknowledgement and directive of mourning was issued... fifty years after the fact! Usual folds, a few minor tones spots, archival tape repair to seal tear on address leaf, else very good condition on bright, white paper. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
