<B>John Tyler Fine Content Autograph Letter Signed "<I>J. Tyler</B></I>"</B></I><B> as President,</B></I> one page, 4 x 5 inches (sight), no place, no date, c. June 1843 forwarding an application by the naval Hero Daniel Chester Reid to Secretary of the Navy Abel P. Upshur. He writes, in full: "<I>Dr Sir this application is from the gallant defender of the General Armstrong yrs J. Tyler</B></I>" The <I>General Armstrong</B></I> was an American privateer commanded by Reid during the War of 1812 and has the distinction of fighting the final naval engagement of the war. On September 26, 1814, the <I>General Armstrong</B></I> was attacked by a British squadron while she was taking on fresh water in the Azores. Despite being outnumbered, Reed managed to resist several attacks on his ship inflicting terrible casualties among the British before he was forced to scuttle his ship. As a show of respect for his heroic services, he was granted an appointment as a master in the United States Navy on July 3, 1843. Less than a month later Upshur would assume the post of Secretary of State. Upshur was tragically killed in 1844 on the U.S.S. <I>Princeton</B></I> when one of the ship's guns exploded during a cruise on the Potomac River. Very clean and bright with a bold signature, very fine condition.
